Struggle for Survival X-perience

SHSS, Year 1
Participant of Survival X-perience

On 28 November, 2015, I took part in a very inspiring and unique simulation game called Struggle for Survival X-perience which was held by Crossroads Foundation, one of the famous Hong Kong-based, non-government organization (NGO). As a freshman, I always wanted to jump out of the box to explore more and use the knowledge and skills which I gained from school to give back to society as well as gaining a deeper understanding of our society. However, it was not easy for me to strike a balance between academy and social voluntary activities. Thanks to this activity which was introduced by Student Housing and Residential Life Office of HKUST, I was given a valuable chance to know more about this local NGO and participate in this meaningful game.

Experience the X-perience

The simulation game was not simply a game with fun and enjoyment. More importantly, it gave us a realistic and vivid picture of the real lives of the poor. They needed to face many problems which threatened their everyday lives, including disease, shortage of clean food and toilets, the rising fee of the poor accommodation and the rising price of food. They were one of the weakest groups of people in the world which needed help from the others. However, there were little chances and opportunities for them to change their lives and destinies. Many charity organizations could only provide the basic financial and material aids for the poor people but could not enhance their living standard. What’s more, without a practical and prompt solution to this urgent problem, the number of poor people will increase in the following years since the gap between the rich and poor is widening especially in the developing countries. Thus, the lives of the poor will rely on the social development and fairness of the world.

Reflection on and Redirection in Life

After joining this game, I was so fortunate that I was born with so many things that many people in the world were deprived of. For instance, the chance of receiving education, comfortable accommodation and good health.

Cherishing what I have and trying my best to help people in need are the lessons I learnt from this game. Every one of us has the power to change the world and contribute to society. The first thing we need to do is to step out of our comfort zones to understand the living situation of the poor and to help them not only financially but also mentally. Give them a hope of living and change their lives radically.
