Atriumus Noisius, the Breed that might Take Over the World
March 6, 2009 by Dinuka Soysa, Sri Lanka (BEng, Electronic Engineering, Yr 2)

A rare breed of manlike creatures was found to be the inhabitants of a natural wildlife reserve at the outskirts of Kowloon, towards the edge of Sai-Kung.  These creatures seem to blend well with the human society, except for one certain period of the year that lasts for about a month in spring.  During the period, the species get into a peculiar stage of metamorphosis (phase of psycho-physical change) in their lives.

Known scientifically as "Atriumus Noisius", the name of this breed already provides some clues for their behavior.

The species enter this stage of metamorphosis when they will hold proceedings and go through a series of rituals to allow people to choose their leaders. This is a period where "the survival of the fittest" principle is put to test. In the period the species will camouflage themselves with bright-colored costumes or disguise themselves as soldiers, policemen, construction workers, mechanics, magicians, pandas (in the attached photo, next to the author of this article), trees and even brides who wear wedding gowns!

The proceedings usually include long spells of loud noise – noise so unbearably raging that you’ll find your ears exploding and wouldn't hear your cell phone ringing. No human species is ever known to have produced sound of this magnitude by using the bare vocal chords.

The activity begins each morning and free food and drinks are offered: the efforts being put in are amazing. Despite all their attempts, not many human beings will fall prey to their allure and end up electing them as leaders.

This period of heightened activities and noise explosion normally comes to an end in (month) and I urge you to go to the HKUST atrium and observe this rare sight.  Remember to carry some earplugs with you and hope you will return safely back home !
