(4) Transportation
HKUST is located on the Clear Water Bay peninsula in East Kowloon, less than 30 minutes' driving time from Central Hong Kong. With an accessible and convenient public transport system, students and staff are consistently encouraged to take public transport to the campus. In order to further reduce energy and carbon emissions, HKUST has implemented a number of measures to decrease the number of single occupancy vehicle trips and encourage the use of eco-friendly vehicles.

Contractors are hired by the Campus Service Office (CSO) to provide shuttle bus services for staff and students. Of the contractor's 17 coaches, 12 are now at EURO5 standard. Ten routes for staff and two routes for staff and students with a total of 36 services are provided on each working day, covering key areas of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. Additional buses are provided during lunch hours for staff who travel off-campus for lunch. In 2012, the new 2011 Camry Hybrid was introduced as the official vehicle, adding one sedan (the new Camry Hybrid) and two multipurpose vehicles (Estima Hybrids) to the Official University Transport car pool.

The Health Safety and Environment Office (HSEO) launched a ride-sharing award scheme in 2012 to encourage staff members who drive to share their vehicles with colleagues when travelling to and from campus. 15 participants have joined the scheme so far. Ride-sharing helps cut carbon emissions, especially if it reduces the number of staff driving to work. At the conclusion of this scheme, awards will be given out to reward participants.
To further promote green transportation, the FMO has provided two parking spaces and charging facilities for electric vehicles.  The parking spaces are located on LG2 in the multi-storey car park.
