When developing architectural briefs for new buildings, the FMO requires consultants to design buildings which achieve specific levels of performance. Since December 2007, the FMO has adopted the Gold Standard of performance under the HK-BEAM (Building Environmental Assessment Method) system as the minimum level to be achieved.

The new Student Halls 8 and 9, which provide 700 places to student residents, opened in 2012. These halls had a number of green features:
  • 29 solar water heater panels to preheat incoming city water upstream of the domestic hot water system,

  • A roof garden to reduce solar heat load,

  • Motion sensors in the corridors,

  • Photo sensors in the staircases,

  • Electricity meters on each floor,

  • Roof lighting from solar energy
