(7) Minimizing Pollution and Avoiding the Use of Hazardous Materials
In 2012, the University took several steps forward in the following areas.

Air Quality
  • The acquisition of new Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Certificates (Good Class) for the following: LG7 Canteen, LG1 Learning Commons, LG5 Student Union Office and entire Library Building, including the LG1 Learning Commons.
  • The renewal of IAQ Certificates (Good Class) for the Multi-Sport Hall, Lecture Theatres and Computer Barns.

Water Quality

Monitoring water quality is an ongoing task. Water samples are collected from portable water outlets, the University's swimming pools and the dental clinic for water quality testing to ensure compliance with public health guidelines. In 2012, a total of 6,000kg of used cooking oil was collected from catering outlets for recycling; as an alternative to being disposed of into the wastewater stream.

Avoiding the Use of Hazardous Materials

The University reduces hazardous waste generation via two avenues: 1) the substitution of non-hazardous materials and 2) the conducting of micro-scale experiments. Each requisition for hazardous materials is screened for dangerous properties. These materials are acquired only when no alternative materials are available; and the quantity purchased is strictly limited to the amount needed.
