In May 2013, ITSC has installed a new telephone system along with a new voicemail system for the new Lee Shau Kee (LSK) Campus. The new telephone system leverages on the data network to provide voice services using IP Telephony technologies. This converged data-plus-voice-network approach simplifies overall management and administration (moves, additions and changes), hence lowering cost of ownership. Two types of IP phones are deployed in LSK Campus: (1) Executive phone (with video conferencing capability), and (2) Standard phone.
The new telephone system is linked to our old telephone system in a way that keeps the same dialing mode that we are used to for internal calls. Namely, users only need to dial the last 4 digits (i.e. the "Extension") for internal calls, regardless of which telephone system is involved. For instance, users at LSK Campus only need to dial 6200 to reach the ITSC Service Desk.
Later on we will be leveraging on the new voicemail system to support unified messaging, allowing voicemails to be accessed directly through an e-mail client.
We plan to build on the new telephone system so that it will gradually also serve users on the Main Campus. With this, we can gradually phase out the old telephone system that mostly utilizes obsolete analog communication technology.
A plan is in place to migrate our users from the old voicemail system to the new one that has higher resiliency and more functionalities. Stay tuned! |
