Due to a significant increase in student population, the campus Wi-Fi infrastructure has met with a major challenge in 2012. A 30% growth has been recorded in the number of individual users and connecting devices. As new generations of mobile devices are made available on the market, we also observe significant increases in the number of concurrent Wi-Fi sessions starting from May 2013:

Number of Connecting Devices
We had around 13,500 and 29,500 unique devices connected to our Wi-Fi network in May 2013 for hostel areas and the whole campus (Fig. I). Compared with last year, we got 35% and 30% growth respectively.
Number of Connecting Users
In May 2013, around 6,500 and 14,000 unique users (with one or more devices) used Wi-Fi in hostel areas and the whole campus respectively (Fig. II). We see a growth of 27% in hostel areas owing to the occupation of UG Hall XIII and IX in Spring 2012.
Number of Devices per User
We observed that on average users were using two Wi-Fi devices for last year (Fig. III). This aligns with our observation that mobile Wi-Fi devices are pretty common for our HKUST community at large.
