It has been 15 years since the Library opened its first sculpture exhibition – so we felt it was past time to show off another sculptor's work.
"Karma – Landscape Sculpture by Danny Lee Chin-fai" jointly presented by the Library and the Center for the Arts, had its Opening Ceremony on 17 October in the Library Gallery. Ms Florence Hui Hiu-fai, SBS, JP, Under Secretary for Home Affairs, HKSAR Government; Ms Connie Lam, Executive Director, Hong Kong Arts Centre; Mr Danny Lee Chin-fai, Artist; Prof Tony F Chan, HKUST President; Ms Diana Chan, University Librarian; and Mrs Pandora Yuen, Director of Student Affairs, officiated at the Ceremony.
It was followed by a guided Gallery Tour by the artist, who shared his creative journey while walking among the exhibits.
Born and educated in Hong Kong, Mr Danny Lee is a renowned local sculptor whose works have been widely exhibited and received many awards. He has been commissioned to provide public art projects including the Hong Kong Jockey Club-Olympics Cauldron for the Hong Kong 2008 Olympic Equestrian Events. He was the Chairman of Hong Kong Visual Arts Society from 2006-2009 and is currently an executive committee member of the Society, among his many other public posts.
The Exhibition features Mr Lee's selected artworks around the theme of city and nature. Through his exhibits, he invites us to notice the ignored beauty of nature: from drifting clouds to silent drizzle; from the roaring river of traffic, to the shuttling journey between mountain-like skyscrapers.
