Updates on Campus Wi-Fi
Steven Wong
Assistant Director (IT Infrastructure)
Taking into consideration the feedbacks obtained from the recent IT Services surveys, we have performed some improvement works over the summer time to further enhance the campus Wi-Fi infrastructure:

Deployment of New 802.11ac Access Points

We will be gradually deploying more and more new and faster wireless access points (AP) based on the latest 802.11ac standard, or so-called 5th generation Wi-Fi standard. We anticipate that there will be more and more mobile device supporting this new standard for better wireless performance. This new standard supports a theoretical Wi-Fi speed of up to over 1 Gigabit/s, and can be up to around 10 times faster than the current 802.11n standard that has been widely implemented in HKUST.

We have completed the first phase of 802.11ac upgrade by deploying 100 new APs in the following popular Wi-Fi hotspots:

  • Atrium
  • Academic Concourse
  • Catering outlets – 1/F coffee shop, LG1 canteen, LG5 McDonald's & LG7 canteen
  • Library – Main entrance at G/F & Chevalier Learning Commons at LG1/F)
  • North gate bus stop & footbridge
  • Computer Barn B
  • Lecture Theatres (partial)

For the new Cheng Yu Tung Building, we will also be installing over 200 new 802.11ac APs.

Enhancement on Wi-Fi Coverage

We have installed more Wi-Fi hotspots to improve the signal coverage in the following areas:
  • South gate bus stop
  • UG1 laundry room

More enhancements are planned to improve the signal coverage in different areas, including but not limited to the following locations:

  • Lift lobbies
  • Escalators
  • Outdoor path from Main Campus to LSK Campus
  • Boarding area of staff bus

We will try our best to eliminate Wi-Fi blind spots on campus where feasible and cost-effective.

We welcome your suggestions or comments to improve our Wi-Fi service and coverage. Please send to cclisten@ust.hk for our consideration.
