Platfom as a Service (PaaS) for HKUST
Y.F. Lai

Do you know that currently more than 400 web sites and web-based applications for departments and research projects are actually hosted on the "ïHost" service provided by ITSC? Many departments are relying this platform to run their core and critical applications for daily operations. Owing to the popularity and the demand from our users looking for a more flexible application hosting platform, we are now revamping this platform with latest Platform as a Service (PaaS) technology.

PaaS refers an application development and hosting platform that automates server provisioning, server management and server capacity scaling. This will greatly ease off and speed up application deployment because application developers can focus on their core tasks without having to worry about hardware, software and system capacity issues.

Application developers can choose among mainstream programming languages including Java, Ruby, PHP, Node.js, Python and Perl to develop software applications, along with a complete set of application development tools to increase productivity. Furthermore, application developers can easily scale up the system capacity by allocating more resources to an application using a web-based user interface.

The upcoming PaaS platform will be provided in 2 versions: a free version aiming at very basic requirement and a premium version that provides better resources in running more sophisticated or critical applications. Stay tuned for announcement later this year.
