Virtual Desktop for Class Teaching
David Shiu
Head of IT Technical Services and A/V Technology
ITSC is rolling out a new service for teaching colleagues who need to use specific academic software during class hours. Previously, when a teaching colleague needs to demonstrate an academic software in class, he or she has to ask our colleagues to pre-install the software in the teaching venue's lectern PC beforehand. Some colleagues may already notice that it is very common that when a PC is installed with a large number of software, it tends to go slower as the complexity of the setup increases. Also, the computer becomes less stable and there will be compatibility issues between different software or versions. This is causing unnecessary annoyance to our teaching colleagues.

In this Fall semester, we are providing a personalized virtual machine (VM) running Microsoft Windows for every teaching colleague who needs to use specific academic software in class. This VM is actually supported by the campus private cloud infrastructure and pre-installed with common application programs like Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Adobe Reader etc. The user can also install his/her specific academic programs for teaching in class. Since the VM is personal and is used solely by a specific teaching colleague, the issues of compatibility and stability are minimized.

Also, this VM can be accessed anytime anywhere through the Internet. One can use a desktop computer, a notebook computer, an iPad or an Android tablet to remotely log on and prepare for teaching materials before class. We believe this will be very handy for teaching colleagues.
