Water Sports Safety

Water sports are very popular in Hong Kong. However, water sports can be dangerous! The common hazards of water sports include:

  • Drowning of person

  • Sprain, dislocation of joint, laceration and crush injury

  • Heat stroke
The body cooling system may fail due to hot and humid weather conditions. When a person exercises under hot and humid weather conditions, it may lead to an excessive rise in his/her body temperature and the body temperature adjustment mechanism may not be able to function properly, causing heat stroke.
  • Heat exhaustion
Heat exhaustion happens when a person fails to replenish the water and salt which are lost through sweating in time.
  • Skin burn

  • Thunderstorm

  • Rainstorm

Water Sports Safety Tips

When you engage in water sports, please pay attention to the following safety tips:
  • Know how to swim. However, even if you are a good swimmer, wearing a life jacket is recommended when you engage in most of the water sports conducted in the sea.

  • Know the safety rules of the sport.

  • Get the right training for your sport activity and know the correct way to use the relevant equipment.

  • Make sure that you are physically fit.

  • Avoid alcohol and drugs before engaging in water sports.

  • Protect your skin when you are under the sun and make sure that you drink enough water.

  • Check the weather and sea conditions before the activity.

  • Warm up before the race/training. A proper warm-up can increase the blood flow to the working muscle which can prevent muscle stiffness.

  • Cool down after the race/training. If there is no proper cooling down after your workout, your heart rate may slow down quickly and your blood may be left in your lower body which can sometimes lead to fainting.
Apart from the above safety tips, you should also consult your trainer for more detailed information regarding the safety of your sports!
