Can we re-create history digitally? What if you had over 1,000 years of detailed historical and demographic records of a highly developed city?
Come and hear about it, while enjoying light refreshments, as Mr Michele Petochi describes the EPFL's Venice Time Machine project http://vtm.epfl.ch/. This is an international scientific project launched by the EPFL and the University Ca'Foscari of Venice, in partnership with Archivio di Stato in Venice.
The project aims to create a large open access database for research & education from over 80 kilometers of archival documents (digitized, transcribed & indexed) and to use these data to build a multidimensional model of Venice and its evolution. Thus, scholars may illustrate or recreate aspects of the past, from family trees and social connections to physical urban development and change.
About the speaker:

Michele Petochi is Managing Director for Venice at EPFL. He is focused on integrating research, education, visualization, outreach and technology transfer into a unique project and platform in Digital Science and the Humanities. He works with a passionate group of people from EPFL and other institutions on the sustainability of Venice, and pursues new frontiers in the Humanities, enhanced by big data. Michele also acts as a senior advisor to the President and the Secretary General on the strategy of EPFL in Digital Science, Digital Humanities and other priority areas and partnerships.

This is the first in what we hope will be more talks and seminars on the growing area of Digital Humanities.
