The results of the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2014, announced by the University Grants Committee (UGC) on 27 January 2015, indicated that HKUST has attained the highest proportion of internationally excellent research work among the eight UGC-funded Institutions, assuring us of the standards we strive for.

Conducted by the UGC, the RAE 2014 covered the assessment period of six years from October 2007 to September 2013. About 16,500 research outputs submitted by some 4,400 eligible academic staff from eight institutions were evaluated by 13 assessment panels comprising 307 scholars from around the world.

In the 2014 exercise, 1,631 research outputs were submitted by 436 eligible staff from HKUST. A remarkable 70% of submissions by the University were rated to be of either “world-leading” (4-star) or “international excellent” (3 star) standard, a strong indicator of the high academic standards the University maintains.

According to the UGC report in the current exercise, members of the assessment panel were particularly impressed with the performance of HKUST in a number of disciplinary areas including biological sciences, physical sciences, computer science, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, business, economics, finance and social sciences.

At the heart of HKUST is its pursuit for world leading research. As a young international research university, it is an honor for HKUST to be credited with the highest proportion of top recognition across the institution’s many research interests. The University will make reference to the RAE results in developing strategic resource allocation to further drive our research to greater heights.
